Seriously. It began as a windy day in BHG and by the time we boarded the plane and left the runway, the wind did not die down at all. Our ascent was bumpy and as we levelled out, the ride became calm enough to serve lunch. After about an hour in the air, we began the landing - a very steep decline and a very tight turn. By the time we made the turn, I was looking level at a hill/mountain - and the nose of the airplane was still pointing down. It wasn't until we reached just above the runway that the nose of the plane lifted and we levelled out, the pilot having executed a perfect landing. The translator and I just looked at each other, thankful the wheels touched first! This was the same pilot we had going into BHG and he did not fail to disappoint.

After we landed, I headed into UB and I was able to meet the translator's husband and three children. They invited me to their place for some chicken soup. They shared with me some of the work God has done in their lives, as well as the churches in UB. It was once again encouraging to hear how God is working, despite many challenges. One story they shared is when a couple is seeking a divorce, they need a three month cooling off period. After that, they have the opportunity to pursue reconciliation and often with a Christian counsellor - in Mongolia! So they are encouraged to see how the Lord is moving and Mongolia is opening up to the gospel.

I am presently at the airport in UB, having gone through customs, etc. The flight is to leave around midnight and land close to 4:00 a.m. I am thankful for this as it will begin to set my clock back to Canada time.

The Lord has once again been gracious as I have had an opportunity to share God's Word with church leaders. But it is more than that as my heart has been encouraged by how the gospel continues to spread throughout the nations and how the leaders desire to fill not only their heads but also their hearts with God's Word.. After these few weeks, I can say again - our God is a big God!
We wrapped up OT Survey in the New Testament showing how Jesus fulfills the Old Testament types and shadows - He is the new Israel, the new temple, etc. We also talked about a robust gospel, that is Jesus saves us not only from our sins but to a new life. We are filled with the Spirit, enabled to live out the life we receive by His grace.

The students also wrote two tests, Genesis yesterday and Old Testament Survey this morning. Gaining a certificate is very important for these church leaders - they are very eager! As I met with the main leaders over dinner tonight, they spoke about how thankful they are to have theological education in BHG. It does not work for students to go into UB, as it is too expensive and they cannot be away from their churches or families for a long period of time. To have theological education brought to them is a gift, they said. They are also thankful because it fits into their overall vision. They are focusing on discipleship training but see theological education as vital so they have leaders who can build up disciples. The leaders wanted me to thank Grace Bible Church for their support, prayers and efforts to build up the church in BHG.

The translator and I will fly out tomorrow just after 12 noon and then I will catch a flight from UB to Korea around 12 midnight, landing after 3:00 a.m. If all goes well, I will fly out later in the afternoon and after a short stop in Vancouver will land in Toronto Saturday night.

One person told me they knew that the Bible was about Jesus but did not know how. In going through the two sessions, they had a better understanding how the Bible fits together and how to speak about Jesus from the Old Testament. For the students to begin to grasp "how" Jesus is the centre of Scripture makes the trip very worthwhile!David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21445145.post-10912895182183387432013-05-21T06:48:00.003-04:002013-05-21T06:53:32.581-04:00Mongolian LandscapeIt was interesting hearing one of the students thoughts as we were discussing the glory of God in Exodus 34 and how he maintains faithful love to a thousand generations and the consequences of their father's wrongdoing to the third and fourth generation. This student mentioned they have been under a curse and now they are finally under the blessing - meaning that for many years, the gospel was not part of the Mongolian landscape. There is a profound thankfulness from the students that the gospel has come and now their prayer is for the spread of God's glory through His grace. That is part of the eagerness of the students to learn, as we speak about the storyline of Scripture, grace, forgiveness, guilt, repentance, sacrifice - all finding their way to Christ.

The long week is beginning to show on the students. After lunch is really the toughest part of the day and so we maybe make it through 40-45 minutes and then we go for another break. We have two more days of teaching and during that time, they will write two tests.

One of the other things that is happening this year is some of the students are coming forward and sharing some of their stories - mostly of brokenness and hurt. It is a reminder that the church leaders are not immune to discouragements, disappointments and hurts as they serve God and His people. It is good to speak to them (via translator) and seek to encourage them in Christ.

God is gracious to the country of Mongolia - I trust He will continue to show His goodness, His Son, to the people.

Saturday we spent the morning finishing Genesis. We talked about how Joseph came out of prison humbled and praising God, how Jacob reminded us of the three truths of life before Pharaoh (short, hard and a pilgrim - not our final resting place) and how the Lord would come through the line of Judah (would we rather not have come from the line of Joseph, not Judah??). We also prepared a message from Genesis 38, reminding ourselves of Judah's sin, Tamar's action and God's grace (they would have a son named Perez who would be in the line of Jesus). Part of the goal of the teaching is not to only convey the information in Genesis but also to be an encouragement to the leaders, as well as show them how it is possible to preach from Genesis.

As it was Saturday, we only met together until 1:00. In the afternoon, I went to a "wedding reception". We went into the young couple's ger and with a few people had a milky tea and then a camel/goat/sweetened/partially fermented goes-down-oh-so-smooth drink. It was this last drink from which I spent the rest of the day recovering - went to the grocery store and picked up some green tea and tried my best to keep everything in their proper place.

Sunday - I woke up early to write a message I was to preach for one of the churches in the city. During the morning service, we sang, prayed and then I spoke. We looked at the blind man and Zacchaeus, the one had nothing while the other had everything, according to the world's standards. It was an opportunity to share with the people that Jesus alone satisfies. Following the service, a number of us went out for a meal - we waited a couple hours for the meal to arrive as they ran out of fuel and had to run out for a refill. However, it did turn out to be an excellent meal of rice and chicken. My choice of drink was Coke - I figured it was safe and not fermented.

This afternoon, I plan to get ready for the next week - Old Testament Survey. We will look at the books from Exodus to Nehemiah.

So - Saturday and Sunday - culinary delights, cultural moments, communal worship - and fermented camel/goats/sweetened milk ... a weekend in the Mongolian countryside.David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21445145.post-90666208224889450222013-05-17T07:17:00.003-04:002013-05-17T07:18:51.929-04:00Working Our Way Through GenesisIt continues to be very windy here in Bayankhongor and because of the dry, sandy ground, it is also very dusty. There are times when you look out the window and the dust is swirling in large patches. One gets a sense of what a really strong wind storm may be like.

We continue to work our way through the book of Genesis. We spent a fair bit of time working through Genesis 1-3 and the life of Abraham. In travelling through the material, I have tried to press home are first of all the big story line of the Bible - it is not only the story of Adam or Abraham but also the story of redemption and how that impacts our teaching. I also want to help them understand how they could preach from Genesis and Old Testament passages. I asked them if they could/would preach a sermon from Genesis 13 and I got a non-committal stare. So we worked through the passage, studied, prepared a theme and points and talked about how to preach the text in the context. We saw how Abram learned to trust God in the midst of conflict (theme) and how he learned through 1. Worship 2. Growing in trust and 3. Growing in maturity. We saw how Lot moved closer to Sodom while Abram moved closer to the place where he built an altar. It was encouraging to see how they began to understand that you can indeed preach from Genesis and communicate and apply encouraging gospel truth.

Tomorrow (Saturday), we will conclude with the life of Joseph followed by a test. Most days we have begun at 9:00 and worked through until 5:30 or 6:00 so they have been long days, especially for the students. I think tomorrow we may end a little earlier and given them some rest. I will also have the opportunity to preach on Sunday and look forward to worshipping with God's people.David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21445145.post-32277514155943532342013-05-15T07:34:00.000-04:002013-05-15T07:34:01.966-04:00In The CountrysideSome people ask me if I like to ride rollercoasters and I say no. When asked why, I used to answer because I am a chicken and I don't like what they do to my heart. I think I am now going to answer because they are no longer a thrill - I have had the ultimate ride - flying from UB to Bayankhongor on a windy day. Wow! The plane was about hour and a half late in taking off because of windy conditions. However, once ready and cleared to fly, we were loaded on a bus which took us to the plane. We then climbed into the plane and within 5 minutes, we are moving. Seriously. The guy explaining the seat belt-what to do if you crash speech was being bounced around as the pilot whipped down the runway at a very fast clip. The pilot took the corner on two wheels (so it seemed - he did not slow down very much at all!) and we are up in the air - bouncy, ducking, sinking. Man, I felt sick. This is when you just put your head back and try to focus on not having to reach for that bag.

After a while we found some settled air and we were given a quick lunch. Then the pilot started the descent - again, we were bounced around like a ball at my son's basketball games. Somehow, we land rather smoothly and after thanking the Lord for safety, tried to find a way to stand.

So yeah, rollercoasters - so yesterday. So calm. Like a picnic on a calm night compared to an hour and fifty minute flight on a windy day in Mongolia.

After being driven to the church and eating a small lunch (for obvious reasons), I began to teach - 2 until 6. The emphasis was how to view the Old Testament through New Testament eyes. We looked at some Biblical Theology and how redemptive history moves progressively forward toward Jesus who fulfils the Old Testament. When I asked them if they wanted to learn about typology, Jeff who understands english, laughed - but we made it through, talking about shadows in the Old Testament and the reality in found in Jesus.

Today we looked at Genesis 1-2 and talked about creation, sovereignty, marriage, singles, human freedom - among many other subjects.

I was thankful to talk to my family today as yesterday the internet was down. In all of the events, God has been gracious to as I hear of the challenges of the Mongolian church, but also the many, many blessings. God is also raising up a faithful group of leaders who desire to learn God's Word, experience His presence and faithfully serve Him and His people.
In many ways I am thankful for this times as I have inherited a head cold - the rest has been helpful.

One place I have always enjoyed visiting is the Shukhbaatar Square in front of the government buildings. There are three statues, one being Chinggis Khaan, the great conqueror of nations and hero of the Mongolian people. In the past, there havel been ropes to block one off from climbing the steps to get a closer look. However, as I was walking towards the square, music began to play and men dressed in military uniform staggered the steps leading up to the great Khaan. There was no rope and I was able to climb up the stairs and get closer to Khaan himself. After some pictures, I was able to visit the museum just behind the statues.

One other place I was able to visit was Gandan Tegchien Monastery, a Buddhist temple. In touring the site, I saw a lot of people bending, twirling objects, walking backwards over steps, even sitting on and rubbing a giant pair of golden feet. I was thankful for the brief, visual reminder of the history and culture of many of the Mongol people. I have yet to see a church building and yet I have heard from believers the Lord has brought many to saving faith and the glory of His Name spreads.

I fly out tomorrow morning around 8:30 and will begin to teach when I arrive. The classes will go from Tuesday to Saturday and then Monday to Thursday. God promises His Word will not return to Him empty but will accomplish what He pleases (Isaiah 55.11). It is good to be reminded of the power of God's Word - in Canada and Mongolia. Please pray for the church leaders of Mongolia as they serve on the frontlines, seeking to faithfully proclaim God's truth.
I arrived yesterday late afternoon, found a hotel about 10 minutes away - June Hotel (yes, they were open a month early :)) - and had a relatively good night sleep. I am presently back at the airport, sitting in the basement at the Starbucks and have just finished speaking with my family - nothing like Blackberry Video!! As we were catching up, I was able to follow (live) the Leaf's game and because I am actually talking about it, the results were favourable. One of the interesting things about the Inchen airport is Dunk'n Donuts gets main floor while Starbucks lands in the basement. I guess that counts as fighting the establishment, putting "Four-Bucks" in their place, etc, etc.

Today I am able to work on some of the course work for Mongolia and then hopefully this afternoon find a quiet place and a few seats placed together for a nap. Lord willing, I will fly out tonight for UB, landing sometime after 10:00. I thank you for your prayers for my travel, my family and the leaders in Mongolia.
When I was picked up from the airport, she starting speaking in one language to the taxi driver. This is different than asking someone to say a few phrases in a language - this was taxi driver language! And then watching in the market as we went from booth to booth, carpet lady to embroidery lady to computer guy to everything lady, not only speaking a different language but interacting in meaningful relationships. One of the remarkable moments was to watch others as this Canadian spoke their language - a key to being in their culture.

The plane landed early this morning after (yes) another flight delay. I do thank the Lord for safety and meeting up with my family early this morning. I also look forward to being with GBC this Sunday and sometime soon sharing in greater detail my experiences and pictures - I have a video of Karen speaking with the "english professor" at the corner market (not to be missed!)
David I taught for a while this morning and then the students wrote the two tests. Following the tests, the Mongolian Grill was lit! Actually , it is an authentic Mongolian BBQ with potatoes (yes, excited!), some vegetables (excitement waning) and the guest of honour - a goat. While we were waiting the students very graciously gave me a very kind gift. I was very grateful for their kindness.

Then after another small wait, we all sat down to eat. What takes place is you get a bowl of meat and then go for it! You hold it with both hands and start gnawing, ripping and biting - fat and all. It is essentially free for all when the bowl of meat is handed to you. There were also other luxuries such as pickles, watermelon, oranges and ketchup (apparently, goat and smushed tomatoes go well together - although I just stuck with plain goat). I ate my share of fat but I handed over a thick slab to the gentleman in front of me - he eagerly accepted with a smile. There was a communal jack knife which helped carve some of the areas close to the bone.

God has been very gracious this trip. Jeff asked one of the pastors in front of him what he thought of the opportunity to study and he was enthusiastic: "I needed this, not so much for the people but to help lay a foundation in my own life." I was very thankful to hear this from the elderly man who spent most of the time at the front desk with one hand firmly planted on the side of his head. I had wondered how he was receiving the teaching - I guess one never knows.

Tomorrow morning, we will be leaving in a jeep or land rover for the 12 hour trip to UB. Along the way, we will be stopping at someone's house so the church leaders can pray for a man and his house.
David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21445145.post-61916723459658590302012-05-21T19:56:00.002-04:002012-05-21T20:02:55.211-04:00Another Day of Teaching
This is a picture of the provincial government building outside off my hotel room.

Tsegmed leading a time of worship.

Today was a very cold and windy day. As I was teaching, I would look out the window and see the sand and dirt blowing quickly by. One can imagine being out in the wide open space herding their animals and the wind whipping around.

During our time together we looked at Biblical Counselling. We began by looking at the importance of convictions - God's power, the depth of sin, amazing grace, the authority of Scripture. Then we looked at the big picture of what one seeks to accomplish during counselling. We are presently working our way through some practical steps of what to do when someone seeks counsel.

Hopefully today we will finish the counselling in the morning and then I want to spend the final afternoon looking at a few passages that will Lord willing encourage their hearts. Many come from difficult backgrounds and face a number of discouragements and challenges personally and in ministry. So I am praying the Spirit would bring encouragement to their hearts.

Tomorrow we will finish pre-marital counselling followed by a test. In the afternoon, we will be having a "picnic" with either a roasted goat or sheep - we will see. Then on Thursday I will head back to UB, leaving for the 12 hour journey at 5:00 a.m. Please pray that I will be able to leave Friday morning out of UB to Beijing as my connection later in the day is fairly tight.

David We are at the point in the letter when Paul addresses the false teachers and finds he must boast. However, Paul, like his Saviour, turns boasting upside down. After expressing the character of Godly ministry (10.1-11) and setting the parameters for boasting (10.12-18), Paul presents his reason for boasting. Interestingly, the reason he gives is his love for them and the gospel (11.1-15). Now Paul is reluctantly ready to boast. However, unlike false teachers, he will not boast in his strength. Rather, boasting takes a surprising turn as he boasts of his weaknesses, struggles, and even failures (11.16-30). But Paul, ever the pastor, prepares the people to boast the same way as he reminds them of the glory (12.1-6) and the power of God (12.7-10). If Paul is going to boast, it will only be to show the glory of God: "for when I am weak, then I am strong."

The class will begin at 9 but end at 11 for a few hours. Apparently with an upcoming election, a local politician would like to meet with all the pastors. Classes will continue later in the afternoon. That is all I know as I am on a "need-to-know" basis, and on top of that, my grasp of the Mongolian language is rather weak.

Tomorrow I will be beginning a session on Marriage Counseling. Since this is a topic of interest to many, we are expecting more students to come. Sunday I will have an opportunity to preach in a local church and have lunch with a family who serves in BYG. I am thankful for your prayers, especially as I seek to communicate the teaching through an interpreter. Please pray for my stomach as well. The food here is very heavy and sometimes doesn't agree with me. It is good for me to be reminded of 2 Corinthians 12:10: "For when I am weak, then I am strong."David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21445145.post-70297802810295293302012-05-17T14:45:00.001-04:002012-05-17T15:01:02.012-04:00A Postcard from BayankhangorI thought I would try to describe what I see as I look outside my hotel room and as I walk the streets of Banyankhangor. My hotel room is Spartan - two single beds, hard (Sealy would not be happy!), with a TV that carries one channel (mainly repeat NBA playoffs), a stool as a chair, and a dresser desk. The selling feature of this hotel is that it has hot water year round - apparently they turn off the hot water this time of year. It is clean and the real selling feature for me is that as I look out the window, I look out onto the government building with the backdrop of the desert hills (mountains?). This morning the misty sun rose leaving a hazy appearance. There is a rugged beauty to this small city set in the middle of nowhere. As I stood in front of the window, I thought to myself - why here? The desert is massive and they plant a city right here.

After some early morning preparation, I leave the hotel for a ten minute walk to the YWAM building where I have internet access. I turn right, walk 100 metres over gravel and incomplete sidewalks, and then turn right again onto the main street. Here there is a small green iron fence that separates the road from a yellow and red brick sidewalk. Gravel and sand is all around, surrounding this beautiful, incomplete sidewalk. The buildings I walk past hold the banks and supermarkets, the bars and karaoke superstars, apartments and run down buildings. As I walk, I have to be careful as cars have the right of way. I don’t worry too much, though, because the cars cannot move too fast as they navigate the abundance of potholes. I was driving with Jeff the other day and as we went over one particular poor section, he mentioned they built the road right over a spring.

Once I arrive at the YWAM building I have the opportunity to speak with my family and see how they are doing. Tsegmed then comes and picks up Idree (my translator) and myself and drives us to the church. This is the big church in town, and they have new land and a new building. The big ger is still present but we meet in a building donated by churches in Korea. The church is a bright building surrounded by a fence and more dirt. The last few days have been comfortably warm - during the day I step outside of the church and there is a warm, fresh clean breeze sweeping in from the desert. It smells clean, feels clean.

After I am done teaching, I walk home. My route brings me past a gas station, a school, a super market, and many other buildings. My shoes are dusty from the sandy gravel. As I walk past the school a man and woman are having a violent argument in their car - lots of shouting and slapping. Sad, but also a reminder of the great need of the gospel. The children venture a "hi" or a "hello" and with a giggle that they spoke English. I met one little boy in the supermarket who could not stop staring and laughing at me. I would raise my eyebrows and he would do the same as he laughed.David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21445145.post-43571746909807308292012-05-16T09:32:00.002-04:002012-05-16T10:40:05.813-04:00Arrived in BayonhangorArrived in Bayonhangor

After a few days delay, the final plane landed in BYG Monday around 2 in the afternoon. One of the remarkable and beautiful aspects of Mongolia is the endless desert - a rugged beauty from the heights of the plane. God's beauty is astounding as you observe hills and plains declarring His glory!

I was able to start teaching about an hour after I landed, missing only about 6 hours of teaching time after such a long delay. We are working our way through 2 Corinthians - Biblical Leadership In The Church. Today (my Tuesday), we will be watching as Paul lays out the foundation of the gospel message he first brought to the Corinthians. One of the challenges in teaching is to be able to communicate through the language barrier - to express the great truths of God's glorious grace through a translator. As I dialogue with the church leaders, I am learningn that there seems to be a large misunderstanding in the church that being a believer is going to church and consequently experiencing God's blessing. But the Lord has begun to work in the hearts of the leaders, giving them greater understanding of the gospel - the heart of sin and the marvel of forgiveness. I am praying today that the Lord uses 2 Corinthians to further strengthen the message of the gospel.

I am thankful to the Lord that since I have arrived he has given me some good rest (the first night here, I went to bed at 6:00, sleeping through until 6:00 the next morning - ready to run a marathon!!) and good health. The food in Mongolia can be heavy food for the stomach - they love their meat and the large pieces of juicy fat. I also continue to be thankful for GBC which has the opportunity to have a small voice in the early church here in BYG. Many of the church leaders come out of alcoholism and other deep seated spiritual battles over many generations. They sit for hours listening to God's Word desiring to be faithful leaders. I am also thankful for your prayers - God is gracious to hear.David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21445145.post-74243784898778201582012-05-12T10:55:00.003-04:002012-05-12T10:55:55.031-04:00Delayed…..After a safe arrival in Beijing on Friday night, I was able to stay at a hotel. When I arrived at the airport Saturday morning (Beijing is exactly 12 hours ahead) I checked in… only to discover my flight was cancelled until 20:00 Saturday evening. The plans were quickly arranged that I would fly into UB Saturday night, and then leave on a bus early Sunday afternoon to arrive early Monday morning in BYG. However, things aren't going as planned. The latest plans now are that I will fly out Sunday at 18:00 to UB. Air China has put us in a hotel for the night, and so the waiting continues….David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21445145.post-507768473472557652010-05-20T10:07:00.002-04:002010-05-20T10:19:40.637-04:00On My Way HomeYesterday ended with a test for the students and a meal with the leaders of BKH. The test went well as for many this would have been the first test in years! We began the day putting together a sermon from Genesis 6, looking at God's command for Noah to build an ark. After we pieced together a theme and outline, we finished the morning with an encouragement to preach God's Word, knowing that we are never alone - the Spirit blesses His Word. Following lunch - the test! 50 multiple choice questions on Systematic Theology. One of the challenges of taking a test is the language barrier - what may seem like a simple sentence in English can be difficult to translate in Mongolian -so the test ended up being out of 43!

After the final day of teaching, they presented me with some kind gifts (I am now starting my own "ger" collection ;)) and then the leaders took me out to dinner, once again expressing their gratitude that Grace would send me into the countryside to teach their leaders. The meal was fantastic - a bowl of rice served, adding beef (of course!) as the meat from a main plate as the meal progresses. This is followed by Thai soup (I told them I could only have a little otherwise my wife would not recognize me when I returned - I would have eaten so much) and then some apples. A very kind gesture.

I am presently in UB after a wild flight. It was a semi-windy day and for most of the flight we bounced, swayed and dipped. However, I was still able to down a ham sandwich and a can of 7UP. Tonight I am staying at a hotel I stayed at last year, ready for some sleep. I leave tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. to catch the flight to China, Vancouver and then final my family - I mean Toronto.David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21445145.post-14143211529518554072010-05-18T08:11:00.003-04:002010-05-18T08:32:27.148-04:00And They Caught On!Today we worked a lot on developing a theme and main points of the message. We first worked on 2 Corinthians 4.12-16 and after they spent some in time class working on it, we discussed their work. At that point, it was a little discouraging because they seemed to miss what was being taught. So we worked through that example and tried again, this time with James 1.2-4. They spent around half and hour studying and putting together a theme and outline. When we discussed the theme, almost all of them that spoke had a similar theme (complete in a sentence and not only stating the truth but making it interesting for the people) and relevant points. It was really exciting seeing them grasp putting together a sermon.

The Lord has been really gracious in the two courses taught this time. Systematics gave them some basic truths of Scripture they had never been taught and Preaching has given them tools to bring God's Word to the people. They have been very attentive and as the week has gone by, have asked more questions. They also sit on very thin benches with no backs for about 8 hours - and they are soaking in the teaching (except when some get really tired and I see heads dropping on the desks ;)).

After class, Jeff, my translator and myself met with the 2 leaders of the church of BKH. The one leader served us supper at his house and we had an extremely positive and productive meeting. They are thankful for the teaching and so thankful that their church leaders are being taught God's Word. There is no one else offering this type of teaching in this area (the leaders are unable to go to the city for training) and they are so thankful someone would come all the way into the countryside to minister to them. It speaks a lot to them that we went out to them.

So I am so thankful for Grace Bible Church and their gift to the ministry, the leaders and the people of Mongolia. I wish you could have sat with me during the visit to hear their appreciation for the service to the people of Mongolia. So I thank the Lord for Grace Bible Church who serves a people they have never seen but Lord willing will, one day in glory!!David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21445145.post-1082553713797493332010-05-17T09:27:00.001-04:002010-05-17T09:29:26.415-04:00Found One More Picture<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhphslksNxGNYLqE8t2EE-4IOcWXIA8mtCrbr2E6D-jBBtNV4SIlqD1zUeT5qRvAMRGtZv6u1m-lCPddtm3XFtHTiKTW-_BZ8SH2DVsJTHWbO3ISr4SmHjHAJb-vq1UAfscckeU/s320/june+018.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472230530066181858" />David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21445145.post-39055447863613055622010-05-17T09:14:00.005-04:002010-05-17T09:26:02.942-04:00Goat's Meat and Preaching<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPNO5nm9iuH0IFSP5lzs4o5TAz1TbkL-EbUWe0LbxL5kNmAYiEfUO8jK8o85IW9u8rs8DD00UvYyDP-PRE2tbO4NO8yolo4rlHdSoU68El1V8p6KIJeOZjOcXy4RIteG6yPaWn/s320/june+015.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472229508884303602" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSP0MzjrFlF3QnJPLnCfA5rvoV9XpXLkmCdYJ9jAPAM3BjRJPKhkfd39hLNVuqo5gisTsaIRA2qXK4t2uj9g-FdMEfF1dRtIZf8uCKVGXWyxXuVwiYd3IvS6_YhDXr8jA4Da80/s320/june+016.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472229055859298450" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2kR_kcwizTc-dj1QbVwBqxyytK2SIdSO6JaBOml1CC8h6ScSPWhGgpH2mFgFHf8dlQR0-ICyrJfT6SL-rCv6c4M425TtMZjyaCwjCRREfFx2CPhJojoVoKYNPqQtOuLNof3hk/s320/june+017.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472228513034151650" />
On Sunday I was able to preach at the "ger" church in town and then have a lunch with the leaders. The lunch was a real Mongolian BBQ where they cut up goats meat and through it in a boiling pot of water with potatoes and spices. Because of the hard winter, goats meat is at a premium so the goat we got was probably fairly old, if toughness of meat says anything. I had one tender piece and it was delicious. All you need to do is pick it up with your hands, make sure the goats hair is off (our goat had lack hair and plenty of it!)tear it with your teeth and and chew! A great meal all in all. The church service was exciting - I am always thankful to experience church in Mongolia - reminds me of how the gospel is going throughout the world!

Today was a good day of teaching, working through how to practically put a sermon together, starting with choosing a text to getting the theme of the passage. The students have been very eager to learn, many of them being called to preach but no practical training at all!

I have added some pictures (which I think are at the top - still figuring this thing out!). Jeff took some pictures of teaching the students. Please do continue to pray as we have two more days of "putting together sermons".David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21445145.post-3114514548662094352010-05-15T07:32:00.004-04:002010-05-15T07:45:51.400-04:00A Tired DayWell, this was day five of teaching and a Saturday on top of it all. After finishing up a few matters from the first course, we began the preaching course. After lunch, the group was looking rather tired and after about an hour I saw more than a few heads land on the table. I thought either I am boring or they are tired - I went for option two and called an early break. After en extended break, we continued but the eye lids kept dropping so we called it an early day, stopping at 4:00.

Tonight I was able to take Jeff, Shauna and their daughter Kaylee out for a meal (they are the family that is hosting me and have been very kind, hospitable and helpful). We went to a restaurant called the Byanburd, and Shauna and I had some amazing chicken - the first time since leaving Canada. Jeff had this bowl of rice, some cucumbers and other various matters at the bottom.

Tomorrow I have the opportunity to preach at the "ger" church in BKH and afterwards meet with the leaders. We are also going to have a lunch with something boiled in milk - I forget exactly how Jeff explained it but I do remember him say, "oh, you have never had it - you are in for a treat." I will definitely keep you posted!David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21445145.post-88343077310854774592010-05-14T10:27:00.002-04:002010-05-14T11:07:41.390-04:00Camel Time on Mongolia!!Today was another busy day of teaching and this time with lots of discussion from the students. We looked at perseverance of the people of God, the church, baptism, Lord's Supper and church discipline - each carrying a lot of practical discussion on how to apply God's Word in their various churches. Does baptism save? What if you do not have enough water in the Gobi Desert to immerse? What do you do if someone is caught in sin but is repentant? It is always encouraging to hear their questions as it lets me know what they are thinking and what the church is struggling with in their ministries.

After the teaching, Jeff took me out into the countryside with a few others and we had the opportunity to ride a camel. Mongolian camels have two humps and because it was such a harsh winter, one of the humps on the camel was "limpy" (you will see the "limpy" humps in some of the Mongolian art work). It was a great experience and as I rode I looked out over the Northern Gobi thanking the Lord for the beauty of His creation and the opportunity to be sharing God' Word. I will say the dismount from a camel can be a little awkward - front knees first and then settling down on his hind legs. Every time the camel had to bend, he would let out this groan as if to say, "Oh man, not again."

It was a good day and I look forward to the opportunity to begin to teach homiletics tomorrow for four days. Sunday I am preaching in the large "ger" church in town, looking forward to worshiping with them. Now, as you are in the middle of your day, I think I will head to bed!David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21445145.post-40223757045308882362010-05-13T07:54:00.002-04:002010-05-13T08:17:53.044-04:00Thursday In MongoliaIt was another beautiful day in Mongolia. The sun is warm with a cool breeze, the Mongolians enjoying the first signs of spring. Jeff and I traveled to the church where we are doing the teaching and from 9-5 we are together learning God's Word. For many of the students, this is the first time they are hearing from Scripture an explanation of the Trinity, God's sovereignty in salvation, special revelation and other teachings from Scripture. So they are thankful for the opportunity to train and hear the teaching of God's Word. It is amazing to see their enthusiasm and patience as they sit for a very long day.

After teaching, Jeff took me to the large hill in the middle of the city. I was able to see the mountains surrounding the city, the mountains further back still having snow on the tops. The city of BKH is large, filled with gers surrounded by fences in a neat, orderly fashion. While we were up on the large hill, a group of 10-15 grade 5 boys and girls began to talk with us and wanted us to take their pictures. And that is how it began - we would take some pictures and they would look at themselves, then they wanted to take pictures and look at them and then they wanted to run with my camera down the hill to take pictures of their friends... and look at them. It was amazing to see their joy and their laughter at the "tourist". We finally recouped our cameras and drove down the hill, with one guy hanging on the back tire for about 10-20 feet.David Robinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13967760489081658276noreply@blogger.com0
